AV CHRISTIAN WRITERS CONFERENCE

May 2-3 in Lancaster, California

Whether you’re an absolute beginner – a seasoned professional – or somewhere in-between, this may be for you. If you enjoy writing, and you’d like to learn how the publishing business works, you are welcome to attend.

We have assembled a fantastic faculty for this year’s conference.

Our keynote speaker T im Riter has published nine books and written articles for the Los Angeles Times, Christianity Today, Discipleship Journal, and Moody Magazine. Tim's theme will be Shaken, Not Stirred. We want to be stirred by God, so that we can write his words and thoughts. We want to stir others up with our writing. Yet God wants something more radical from us: He wants to shake us out of our comfort zone. To take risks, and stretch ourselves.

Alton Gansky will speak on two topics: A Peek at My World: Real Proposals, Real Manuscripts, Real mistakes, Real Successes. And Everything I Wish I Knew Before I Started.

Kathy Ide will lead a workshop based upon her book, Polishing the PUGS: Punctuation, Usage, Grammar, and Spelling.

Kathi Macias will lead a workshop based upon her book, The Train-of-Thought Writing Method.

Susan Titus Osborn's workshop is entitled Writing Nonfiction Books.

Linda Olson's theme will be What's Your Story?- Discovering what God has done in your life; Inspiration, Guidance & Taking it to the next level;

Steven Hutson will lead a workshop for beginning writers, entitled So, You Wanna Get Published?

WORDS OF WISDOM FOR WRITERS

The secret of becoming a writer is that you have to write. You have to write a lot. You also have to finish what you write, even though no one wants it yet. If you don't learn to finish your work, no one will ever want to see it. The biggest mistake new writers make is carrying around copies of unfinished work to inflict on their friends.

I am sure it has been done with less, but you should be prepared to write and throw away a million words of finished material. By finished, I mean completed, done, ready to submit, and written as well as you know how at the time you wrote it.

WHAT'S THIS HADLEYVILLE THING?

Those of you familiar with Mark Twain’s works might recognize my blog title. As Samuel Clemons grew older, he became increasingly disillusioned with humanity. Towards the end he began referring to the Damned Human Race; employing the secular and religious epithet at one stroke.

I find I’ve not reached that level of despair myself. I still believe in redemption and I still see signs of nobility even among we fallen, damned creatures. So, I could not bring myself to call this blog “On the Damned Human Race.” I do however, resonate with another of Clemmons stories; “The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg.” And viola, there you have it. “Observations From Hadleyville.”
